Image of the Day: Deciding to Fly

Bittersweet beauty on a foggy morning

Sandhill Cranes in a foggy field

This isn’t the post I had prepped for today. It was going to be something entirely different. But then today’s date hit me with a hammer blow, as it does every year, no matter how aware I am of it. Today marks sixteen years since my mom passed away, and it’s always an emotional one.

I’ve tried to plan for it, though: I’ve got a full day to keep myself occupied. I write this from the Dayton area, where I’ve spent a very chilly morning hiking at a couple different parks, and soon I’ll be stopping in to cheer for some friends competing in a jiu-jitsu tournament around the corner.  The best way I can honor her is to keep on living the best I can, so I’ll make sure that’s what I do.

Today’s image is also in her memory: I remember when I was young going with her to watch the Sandhill Cranes migrate at Jasper-Pulaski Fish and Wildlife Area. She was so excited to go see them.

These cranes are for you, Mom. I hope you like them.
