Image of the Day: The Face of the Cave

Do you see it too?

Rock that looks like skull

The phenomenon of seeing faces or patterns in things like wood grain or clouds is called pareidolia, and it’s a common thing to experience- not surprising, as a species wired to recognize faces. In today’s Image of the Day, I found myself before a flowstone formation that proved to be yet another example of this while exploring a wild cave in Kentucky in the spring of 2017. The formation appears to form a cadaverous face, canted like a prop from a horror movie, though a few steps in any direction changes the angle enough to ruin the illusion. Nature is amazing.

I did make sure not to practice any Latin while I was down there, just in case.
