Image of the Day: Sunrise Behind the Peak

A sun as bright as opportunity.

Sunrise behind a mountain

Today’s image of the day is one that I love for a few reasons. The gradient of the sky is intense in its simplicity, culminating in shafts of brilliance that spotlight the surrounding mountains and one particular standout pine. But just as meaningful to me is its story.

I watched this sunrise from Estes Park, Colorado, in October of 2020, near the beginning of the month-long trip around the country mentioned in Hikers in Death Valley. We had stayed in the local campground the night before and watched a black bear amble through the grounds before bed then slept to a symphony of bugling elk in the distance with the occasional interruption from an owl. I felt as if I’d been welcomed into the wild, even though we were still only in its gateway.

In the morning, the sunrise and the road awaited to show the way to the adventure of the coming day.

And they still do.
