Although the subject of today’s Image of the Day walks (kinda) like a duck and swims like a duck, this odd chunky bird is more closely related to rails and even cranes than the birds that it often swims alongside. Meet the Fulica americana, or the American Coot.
This golden-hour image dates from early March of 2023 and I love how the ripples on the water blend perfectly into the soft gradient of clouds in the sky. The bird, with its broken reflection in the ripples and forehead shield catching the light to give a cyclopean vibe, makes the image feel even more surreal.
