A strange bird with a great name.

Meet the Anhinga. Like the Bison, this is one of those examples where the scientific name is a gimme once you’ve got the common name down: It’s Anhinga anhinga. These are waterbirds similar to Cormorants, though in a different taxonomic family.

They’re also sometimes called snake birds, a nickname that comes from their suspiciously slithery necks. I love snakes, so that’s a win. Maybe that’s why I thought it was so cool…
