This is one of those instances that really requires two pictures, so today we’re getting a BOGO. I found these whirligig beetles drifting down the St. Joseph River on a calm October day with the water like glass.
In the nine seconds that elapsed between the first image and the second, something startled them. It could have been me, or something in the water: With two pairs of eyes, they can watch above and below the surface simultaneously. Their erratic movements and resulting patterns may startle and bewilder potential predators, as well as aiding them to hunt.
I found their abstract result beautiful, and the contrast from stillness to frenzy amazing.
