Image of the Day: Ducks in a Row

Are your ducks in a row?

Ducks swimming in a row

I don’t know exactly where this colloquial phrase came from- a quick search online gave me a handful of different answers including a mother duck keeping track of ducklings as they walk or swim, and hunters making the most of their ammunition by lining up multiple animals in a shot. Whatever the case, having your ducks in a row has come to mean that someone is organized and has it all together.

I’m not sure that my metaphorical ducks are in a row. Row-adjacent, maybe: Ready to hustle into position if someone happens to look over. But until then, I’d imagine that at least one’s asleep and another is on the roof quacking about something silly. I’d better get to work before it remembers to start reminding me that I need to edit photos.

The Ring-necked Ducks (Aythya collaris) in today’s picture set a way better example than I could. But on the flip side, I think they’d have a hard time with a camera. I suppose we’ll just leave our respective purposes as they are.
