Proud Earth

Why queer animals are worth attention.

Deciding what to feature on a given day is generally most influenced by what photos came out the best of animals I’ve encountered, and what story I feel like telling. But over the course of Pride Month this year, I will be focusing specifically on non-heteronormative species, or those that don’t fit into the traditionally expected binary gendered behaviors and/or bodies.

These examples are important since a major argument used by bigots is that queer people are unnatural, but that only shows that nature is way wilder than they ever imagined.

The series began fairly chastely yesterday with a pair of flirting cowbirds, but tomorrow I will introduce the gayest animal on earth. Any guesses? (Don’t look it up, it spoils the fun!)

And the month is only beginning.

The colors of the Pan pride flag show up in an early-dawn Montana sky.

    1. That had been my first guess too, but no!
