On August 1 the people of Fishers, Indiana marched against ICE. This came as response to a mass deportation rally scheduled at an initially undisclosed location in Fishers (though later moved to Greenfield) by former Border Patrol head and now full-time rabble-rouser Greg Bovino along with Indiana Lieutenant Governor Micah Beckwith.
Clearly unimpressed with this nonsense, about a thousand people showed up for the Hoosier Hospitality March at Roy Holland Park in Fishers and marched to the nearby Thomas Weaver Municipal Complex in protest of ICE and their policies, as well as in support of the people being targeted by those policies. The signs said two different things that combined to make a powerful message: We are angry, and yet we have hope.
Having grown up in that county when it was a much smaller place, I was particularly proud to join in this march and to see the passion of the other protesters, particularly the volunteer organizers from Fishers Resists who made everything go smoothly. And while we did not end up near the rally, we can be consoled by the fact that their secrecy shows the cowardice of the ICE supporters and their implicit acknowledgment of being in the wrong.
While they hid like roaches, we marched under the sky.
